The lower courses of bricks on this section of wall were rendered and had been patched in various lime and cement mixes. The render was failing and coming away from the background in most areas and it was decided to remove all the loose render and cement patches and leave any well adhered lime basecoat.
Seciltek CS is a consolidating render usually used as a basecoat. However due to the varying depths the render needed to be applied it was decided to use it a basecoat and topcoat combined. In addition the gritty aggregate size in the product allowed the surface to have a rough texture ideal for shedding rainwater.
The render was then painted in Mapei Silancolor in Charcoal colour to maintain the permeability and also because of the paints ability to go over the previously painted area around the bottom of the cottage. At the same time the cement pointing to the brickwork above the plinth was removed and replaced with our Medium Stuff in Oatmeal colour finished flush to the brickwork.
Most breathable silicate based paints can not take the quantity of pigment required to make a black coloured paint. At the time Silancolor in Charcoal was one of the darkest colours available in a breathable paint which is able to be painted over most existing paints. Although Silancolor in Charcoal is lovely dark grey colour, when Graphenstone was introduced about 4 years after the plinth was painted in Silancolor the homeowner was keen to try the Grafclean which is available in a much darker colour Ebony due to its unique formulation.
Graphenstone Grafclean is a mineral and vegetable resin which has graphene within the paint. This gives a lovely flat matt finish and due to the graphene offers a very hardwearing surface whilst maintaining the permeability of the substrate. It is also ideal for painting over existing painted surfaces. The end result looks great as the Grafclean in Ebony colour co-ordinates well with the black timber cladding and the rendered addition painted in Mapei Silancolor Aged White.
